How to Make Your Holiday Cheaper

Look for the bargains and try something different for a change. Not all holidays have to cost the earth.

If you decide to go abroad or stay in this country, there are ways to make holiday on a budget. For a start, self catering can work out cheaper than half or full board although if you are going with a large group of people or family, then investigate the cost of all-inclusive. There are some very good savings to be made, particularly if you are going to a resort that is notoriously expensive or remote, as local restaurants can and will charge what they like as there is little other choice.

Most people want to catch the sun on holiday but if that doesn't interest you, then look for a holiday with a difference. If you want culture and history, try looking closer to home. Wales, Scotland and Ireland are steeped in history and sightseeing opportunities and are reasonably priced as they all want to attract the holiday maker. If you do holiday in this country, and you have children who just want to spend time in the water, look for holiday parks. Virtually all of them have an indoor heated swimming pool and onsite entertainment which will keep them amused. Make sure you pack a few board games or electronic games in case the weather is very bad.

Eating out and excursions are the two major costs on any holiday. If you are abroad on a package holiday, remember that the rep is usually rewarded by the resort to send people on organised and expensive trips. If you do want to see the sights, check out how much it costs to take a bus or a taxi. It will work out cheaper. If you have the chance, don't drag the kids around with you. Go alone.

Cheap holidays are few and far between so don't assume that you will get a good last minute deal. Shop around and make a list of exactly how much you have to spend and see it as a challenge to find somewhere that will suit you, your family and your pocket.
